Foley Catheter Sizes Explained (French / Fr)

Foley Catheter Sizes Explained (French / Fr) – Beyond Pharmacy guide

Catheter sizing confuses many buyers. Here's what 'Fr' means and how to choose.

What does 'Fr' mean?

French (Fr or CH) measures the catheter's outer circumference — higher numbers are wider. Each Fr is about 0.33 mm in diameter.

14Fr vs 16Fr

14Fr is a common adult size for routine drainage; 16Fr gives greater flow where output is higher. Use the smallest size that drains adequately for comfort.

Balloon volume

Indwelling Foley catheters have a retention balloon inflated with sterile water per the labelling — confirm the volume on the packaging at point of use.
